German markets will be closed all day on December 24 and 25, while markets in Britain, France and Australia will close early on December 24. In some countries including Britain, Germany, France, Australia and Canada, the market will be closed on December 26 due to Boxing Day. Hong Kong will have a long Christmas holiday.
2026 holiday list released
The domestic exchanges recently released the official trading holiday calendar for 2026, informing investors and traders about the non-trading days in the cash and derivatives segments. The proposed schedule under the bye-laws and F&O rules of the exchange includes details of 15 complete trading holidays throughout the year as well as weekends and holidays falling during the annual muhurat trading session. There will be one more holiday in 2026 than this year.
Additional leave in 2026
Equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives markets will remain closed for 15 days in 2026. The year begins with Republic Day (January 26) and includes major religious and national holidays such as Holi (March 3), Ram Navami (March 26), Mahavir Jayanti (March 31) and Good Friday (April 3). Markets will also be closed on Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14), Maharashtra Day (May 1) and Bakri Eid (May 28).
The second half of the year includes Moharram on 26 June, Ganesh Chaturthi on 14 September and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October. Dussehra is on 20th October, followed by Diwali Balipratipada on 10th November and Guru Nanak Jayanthi on 24th November. The last business holiday of the year will be Christmas on 25 December. A small surprise in this circular is that no holiday is mentioned for Diwali, as it falls on a weekend (Sunday).

What do the experts say?
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments Ltd, said the Indian stock market remained range-bound this week with fewer trading sessions due to holidays. The recent liquidity enhancement measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India are expected to improve systemic liquidity and help contain currency fluctuations. The RBI on Tuesday said that to boost liquidity in the banking system, Rs. 2 lakh crore will buy government bonds and auction 10 billion dollars of dollar-rupee purchases. This OMO purchase and swap auction will be conducted between December 29, 2025 and January 22, 2026.
