The top 10 list of best selling cars in India is now clearly seeing a change. Maruti Suzuki, which ruled the list for many years, is now slowly losing its grip and companies like Tata Motors, Mahindra and Hyundai are quickly making their way. In the year 2021, Maruti had 8 cars in the top-10, but by November 2025, this number has reduced to 6.
At the same time, Hyundai has consistently maintained its presence in the list and Indian companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra have now emerged as a major challenger. Tata Motors has had two models in the top-10 consistently since 2022, while Mahindra joined the list for the first time in 2024 and has a model firmly in the top-10 in 2025.
Tata Panch breaks Maruti’s 40-year-old record
The year 2024 proved to be a turning point, when the Tata Punch became India’s best-selling car, breaking Maruti’s decades-old dominance. This was the first time a non-Maruti car became the number-1 selling car of the year. This trend will continue even in 2025. Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon finished second and third between January and November, undermining Maruti’s dominance in the top-5.
Maruti’s top-10 cars in 2025 include Dzire, Wagon-R, Ertiga, Swift, Franks and Brezza. Tata’s Nexon and Punch, Hyundai’s Creta and Mahindra’s Scorpio feature in the list. At the same time, Maruti’s premium hatchback Baleno is out of the top-10.
The market has changed due to the growing demand for SUVs
The demand for SUVs in the Indian market is steadily increasing. Creta and Nexon could touch the sales figure of around 2 lakh units by the end of 2025. However, despite this, the Maruti Dzire has performed brilliantly as a sedan, especially with its CNG variant.
The competition will intensify in the coming time as companies are coming up with new models and updates. Tata’s new Sierra SUV has received more than 70 thousand bookings on the day before its launch. At the same time, Hyundai has received over 46 thousand orders for the new sedan and Mahindra is gearing up to bring the Scorpio-N facelift in 2026. With all these changes, it is clear that the list of best selling cars in India will change even more in the coming year.
