Set the scene, its Christmas 2005. The parents are asleep, the sister is round her boyfriend’s and I aimlessly flick through the channels with the air of someone sick to death of routine. I land on ‘Doctor Who’ and decide to stay. Of course I knew about the show. It had began on the BBC in 1963 at the hands of Sydney Newman, C.E.Webber and Donald Wilson and stayed as unmissable family viewing until 1989. However as with a huge amount of television, its inevitable viewing figures fell and in 2004 it was a certain Welsh writer Russell T Davies who took it upon himself to re-invent the iconic series. Like most teenagers my age and most Britons I had heard of the series from parents and numerous television shows. However I did not watch the first series in 2005 but began on the 10th Doctors’ first appearance from Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant. It was on that Christmas Day 6 years ago that I fell in love. Literally. I’m talking boxsets, posters, action figures, the lot. I was and am still a big ‘Doctor Who’ fan. In my eyes it is the best thing on television (equal to Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ ‘Sherlock’ but I’ll save that for another blog). Not only is the series clever, brilliantly made and contains amazing performances from Britain’s finest but you can tell that every person on the show enjoys their job. From the young fanatic writers who watched when they were younger than me, to the actors and even to the crew. Each scene is just, in my opinion, the best it can get. Television and film can take me from tears, excitement to laughter and this is one of the aspects of why I care dearly for both television in itself and the show ‘Doctor Who’. Right, now hopefully there’s an understanding for how much I adore this show, let me explain how my day on the 21st November 2011 went. I had told myself that if the cast of my favourite show did a signing I would put myself out there to go. The cast of series 5 and 6 of ‘Doctor Who’ were going to be at Westfield in Stratford and me and my good friend Sam (who isn’t a fan at all but he came with me and I was very grateful) got up at 6am, got the train and made our way into HMV to collect our wristbands and for me to buy the series 6 boxset. At 2 o’clock I queued up with other fanatics, some in costume, some from other countries but all with the purpose of meeting and gaining a glimpse of our favourite characters. My time came and was over as quick as it began but it was worth it. The whole process was worth it. I enjoyed the whole day and from it I gained this advice. You should always go for something you want, whether it be just getting your favourite actor or actress to sign something or something more important, never let the fear of that aspiration going wrong stop you from doing it.
As for me at the moment, I am currently still under employment at Marks & Spencer, recovering from Christmas which now seems like a dream I had last night which I still can not remember fully. I did however enjoy my 2011 Christmas. This year my mum, dad and I chose to have our Christmas day on Boxing day with the family and had ham, egg and chips on our actual Christmas day. It began as it started with working
and now the rest of the world goes on with their lives as if we didn’t just all celebrate a religious holiday and give presents for no apparent reason. Back to normality.
Well to my personal current situation, this has actually been the first month I have even thought about sixth form again. Friends have recently asked me if I miss school life and to be honest in some parts I do. I miss seeing my friends everyday and not us all having to work our schedules around when we’re all not busy. However I don’t believe in regrets. There probably are things I would change but I can’t and when I really think about every choice I have made, it has been my own thus the second piece of my very wise advice on this blog is to have no regrets unless you can change your situation. I’m currently sending emails and keeping my fingers crossed while also trying to earn money and put my fingers in as many pies as I can.
Next blog I will talk over another love of mine and we’ll see where I am!
