The news industry

by Alex

Working in the news industry is not as glamorous as it may seem. Many people work for long hours, under highly pressurised conditions and the pay in is not great. Producers can be paid as little as £22,000 a year. A large amount of pressure is placed upon reporters, editors and producers throughout the day.

There is always something to keep them busy. News stories can be found in all places such as on twitter, through police reports, eye witness accounts to unusual events and crimes and even the government themselves.

Certain people don’t just have certain jobs they have to do all types of things. For example reporters don’t just report live or record their report they also have to edit their videos. The only people who have a certain job are two of the editors they are not only a lot quicker at editing than reporters, and they are also a lot better at it. The quality of the video is of a higher standard.

Producers and reporters could have been working on a story for the whole day, but if something new and exciting turned up they would have to scrap their story completely and replace it with a new one. The reporters would have to work very quickly on the story before their slot in the news but if it wasn’t ready in time they would have to use the story that they had scrapped and then place the new story in a later slot.

After their news has been broadcasted they have a meeting to discuss what went well and to discuss what news would be in the next slot and what the stories were about. People give their opinions of the stories that will be showed to the world.

There are not separate news rooms for radio, online and TV. They all work in the same space; this is an advantage for them for they can share their stories with each other and will be able to discuss what their stories are about with people who could help them improve their story.

There are many advantages as well as disadvantages of working in the news industry like appearing on TV, winning awards, working under highly pressurised conditions and your stories being scraped at the last minute. It’s a hard job and not everyone can cope, but it is also an enjoyable job as well.
