On Tuesday 22nd March 2011, there was an inspirational women’s conference at civic theatre in Chelmsford. It was arranged by Mrs Berry (the assistant head at the Billericay school) and 6th form girls because they are doing a project about role models and people that inspire them. They arranged four visitors to come and inspire the year 10’s and 6th form girls to work hard and to never give up.
Mrs Berry told the BBC that she arranged it with 30 year 10 and 12 girls and helped them book the theatre and speakers. During a recent interview some year 12 girls and they told the BBC that the conference was done to finalise a project she arranged for the year 12’s.A year 12 pupil told BBC that her favourite speaker was Sam Baker the editor of RED magazine as she could relate to her the most as she wanted to work in fashion and magazines.
Sarah Parmenter was the first speaker her top tips were:
“BE POLITE, BE APPOCHABLE, BE CONFIDENT. (Even if you don’t feel it!)”
The next speaker, Bridget, sung a poem, “I refuse to dance round poles to prove what I can’t bear to say. I’m not asking for role models, I’m just looking for fair play.”
“I found this very inspiring and it has persuaded me to work hard and never give up on your dreams” quoted Sophie a year 7 at the Billericay school in a recent interview.
The following speaker, Naomi works for a charity encouraging girls to go to school called because I am a girl.
After this there was an inspirational video from Michelle Obama about education and a song from Holly a year 10 pupil at the Billericay school. Finally there was a question and answer with Sam and then anther one with all the speakers.
