Inspirational women’s conference

On the 22nd of March 2011, some of the year 7 girls from The Billericay School went to Civic theatre in Chelmsford as part of a scheme designed to inspire and inform young women.

The girls arrived at the theatre in Chelmsford by the NIBS bus. They went to get checked in. They had to pick a name from a pot. There were famous names like Venus Williams, Mother Theresa , Kelly Holmes, Ann Frank and many more. They had to pick a name because that was the group they were in. The names were stuck up on the walls all around the theatre and they had to find them and sit with their group.

After this it was time for them to go in and they went and sat with their friends, with a pad and pen eager to take notes.

First up, there was a lady called Sarah Parmenter who was 27 and just married. She was there to talk about her career; her job was as a manager of a computer business. She called herself a geek! She said she was proud of her job because she gets a lot of money. Another reason she is extremely proud of her achievements is the fact that she started ten years ago when she was 17.

Next up to speak was Bridget Minimore who was 19 years old.

She had a book of poems and keeps writing poems for a living.

She told the year 7 girls to believe in themselves , to try new things and not be worried over what other people think about you. It’s your life.

Here is a quote from a girl Courtney who went on the trip.

“I really liked Bridget. I thought she was very inspirational and gave a lot of advice.”

The third person to speak was a Scottish woman called Naomi Williams. She told the audience how she used to live on a farm and the children under eighteen got married and had kids a few years after.

She told the audience to never be pressured into something you don’t want to do. Live your life and explore the world.

The last woman to speak was a model called Sam Baker. She has been on the cover of RED magazines. She told the girls that her life couldn’t be much more perfect than it already was. She loved to travel, model and explore. The audience discovered that her job was a dream come true and she had to work very hard to get her modelling career.

Next up to entertain the audience was a year 10 girl from The Billericay School singing ‘If I aint got you’ by Alicia Keys.

After such an inspirational morning the girls went to lunch with their friends and found the groups they were in. They wrote down notes of what they got told in their groups and had plenty to discuss.

at quarter past one they went back into the theatre and they got shown a clip by Michelle Obama, Barrack Obama’s wife.

She was raised on the south of Seattle. Her dad was diagnosed with a mental illness. Michelle always got straight A’s and loved being smart. She was top at everything.

After a very inspiring day the year 7 girls went home and the next day and shared the information with their friends.
