Uniform…Do we need it?

Nearly all schools in the UK have uniform, but why? Is it so that people look the same or smart? Or to keep them from being bullied? Or just so that the teachers can keep an eye on what we wear and do?

A year 10 male student at the Billericay school called Mayowa says:
“If everyone wore what they wanted they would be judged and eventually bullied”. Mayowa thinks we need a uniform to keep people from being bullied for what they wear.

A year 10 Female student at the Billericay school called Ruth says:
“I don’t think we should have uniform. So we don’t look the same, we all look individual.”

A teacher at the Billericay School, Mrs Berry says:
“When I was at school, I felt a lot of pressure on Non-uniform days to wear the most up-to-date outfit.  And now as a teacher, on non-uniform days, students seem to think they don’t have to bring in equipment or learn, it’s just a relaxing day for them.”

We still don’t know whether uniform is a good thing or not, because all of the different views we have had. School uniform will probably be here to stay for a long time now, as teachers feel like they have more control.
Maybe we should have uniform but then we can accessorise with colourful jewelry and things, and allowed to wear black jeans or trainers.

It’s actually shown that once a rigid, extremely strict uniform is enforced in school displinary issue rates go down and performance goes up. Thoughts on this?
